Bollywood Dance Classes in NewcastleLoud, daft, canny good cardio.
There is no timetable on this page yet, only a queue. Sign it — free, non-binding, half a minute of typing — and once enough of the city has done the same, we hire a room with space to throw your arms about in, book a Bollywood teacher and give this list the start date first. Sessions run at £10, or £32 for four in a row, and both numbers are printed rather than quoted on request. Expect the biggest and least self-conscious hour on the whole list: broad movement, film music at volume, and no requirement whatsoever to have done it before.
One queue, and it’s free to stand in.
Half a minute of typing and nothing is owed afterwards. The postcode question is purely geographic, and everybody here hears the launch date before it is published anywhere at all.
the family-shaped queue — junior brackets get properly used on this one ✦
The hour where nobody hides.
Bollywood is generous choreography. The shapes are wide and readable — a shoulder shrugging on the beat, a wrist turning over, a stamp that lands hard — so the distance between a confident dancer and a nervous one closes far faster than it does in any technical style. It is properly aerobic without ever announcing itself as exercise, and because the music carries so much of the weight, the room tends to forget within a few songs that it is being taught anything.
Warm and loud
Music on immediately, because self-consciousness dissolves faster than it can be talked away.
Shapes above, steps below
The hand and arm vocabulary first, the footwork underneath it, then the two stitched together.
A sequence to keep
Enough joined-up choreography to be recognisably a routine by the time coats go back on.
an outline, not a running order — the teacher we book chooses the songs
Come when you can. Nothing lapses, nothing renews and nothing needs cancelling.
Four consecutive weeks, which is about a full routine’s worth of material.
Each name brings the launch closer and holds you a place for when it lands.
no term fees, no membership, no ringing round to discover a price ✦
Two universities, one obvious gap.
Newcastle has a large and long-settled South Asian community, two universities pulling in thousands of new arrivals a year, and a genuine appetite for the music — you can hear it most weekends somewhere off the Bigg Market. What it has not had is a plain weekly Bollywood class open to absolute beginners of any background, with the price on the page. Not a workshop, not a one-off, not a festival slot. A room, an evening, ten pounds.
Bollywood, answered honestly.
nine we get asked repeatedly ↓
When will Bollywood classes in Newcastle begin?+
As soon as this queue can fill a room and keep it filled. It is one of the faster-moving lists because it appeals across three generations at once, and when it tips we hire the space, fix a date and email these names first.
Do I need any South Asian dance background?+
None at all, and roughly half the room never has any. The steps are taught from nothing every time, the terms get explained as they come up, and enthusiasm covers the rest comfortably.
How much is one Bollywood session?+
Two figures, both printed on this page: a session is £10 and four weeks taken together are £32. Nothing is added at the door, nothing renews by itself, and there is no term to buy into first. Getting on the list costs nothing.
Is Bollywood a proper cardio workout?+
It is, though it rarely feels like one at the time. An hour of wide arms, stamps and repeated sequences moves a serious amount of air, and most people finish considerably warmer than they expected to be.
Can children come along with adults?+
This is the style where the junior brackets on the form actually get used. If enough younger names arrive we look at a separate slot rather than mixing everybody in; the launch email will say plainly which brackets the first room covers.
What should I wear for Bollywood?+
Something you can lift your arms in and trainers you can pivot in. Colour is welcome and bangles are fun, but every bit of that is yours to bring — we don't stock, sell or lend any of it.
Which film styles get taught here?+
That depends on the teacher we book and what they enjoy. Most beginner rooms sit in the big commercial film space, with classical or folk shapes borrowed as they come up in the song rather than taught as separate disciplines.
Where in Newcastle would classes be held?+
Somewhere central with a wide floor, hired once the numbers justify the cost. The address goes out with the start date, and the postcodes given on this form are what decide which end of the city gets searched hardest.
Can I join with two left feet?+
Yes, and you will be in significant company. The movement is broad rather than fiddly, which means being slightly behind is invisible from more than a few feet away and stops mattering to you within about ten minutes.
