Tap Dance Classes in NewcastleThe only style you can hear yourself learning.

Tap is percussion you do standing up. The feedback is instant and merciless — a step is either clean or it is not, and your ears know before the teacher says a word — which is precisely why it hooks people so thoroughly. Nothing is running yet; this page is the queue. Signing on is free and commits you to nothing. When the Newcastle list is deep enough we hire a central room with a floor that will take metal and book a teacher who begins at shuffles rather than time steps. Sessions run at £10 per class or £32 for four weeks, printed plainly, with no term to sign and nothing to renew afterwards.

The tap list

Names first, noise later.

Six fields, no strings attached to any of them. The postcode box steers where the room gets hired — a floor that will take tap shoes is a narrower search than most — and this list hears the date first.

a hard floor is a genuine requirement, which is why numbers come before dates ✦

Tap interest list

Always meant to try it? This is where meaning to turns into being on a list.

Sending this means joining the interest list for this class — we’ll email you when it has a start date and a place for you.

Why tap

You can hear whether it worked.

Every other style needs a mirror or a teacher to tell you how you are getting on. Tap tells you itself, immediately, out loud. That instant feedback makes it one of the fastest styles to feel progress in — the first clean shuffle is a genuinely good moment — and it also explains why it suits people who like puzzles more than performing. It is rhythm training dressed up as dancing, it needs no partner at any stage, and once the basics land you can practise them in a kitchen in your socks. Learn three sounds and off you gan.

1Instant, audible feedback. You can hear a clean step and hear a messy one. No interpretation required.
2Rhythm, taught by the feet.Musicality arrives through the soles rather than through any theory.
3No partner, no formations.Everything happens in your own patch of floor and stays there.

Tap & this city

Theatre town, thin on tap.

Newcastle sends a remarkable number of people through musical theatre, amateur and otherwise, and tap sits underneath a good deal of it. Adult tap in the city centre, though, tends to live inside children's schools or term-length courses rather than existing as a class you can simply attend when you fancy. The room this queue aims at would be central — walkable from Grey Street, a short hop from the Bigg Market, straightforward from Jesmond on the Metro — with a floor hard enough to be worth the shoes.

◦The floor is the constraint.Carpet is useless and sprung wood is ideal, which narrows a shortlist quickly.
◦Grown-ups, mainly.Junior brackets exist on the form, but this queue is being built for adults.

Tap, plainly put.

Do I need tap shoes for week one?+

No. Hard-soled shoes make enough noise to learn with, and plenty of people wait several weeks before buying anything at all. When you do want proper shoes they are yours to buy — we do not stock or lend footwear.

Is tap dancing hard on your knees?+

Far gentler than the racket suggests. Good tap is loose and low to the floor rather than pounding, and the sound comes from relaxed ankles rather than force. Anyone hammering away is usually asked to stop, gently, for their own sake.

What are the two tap prices exactly?+

Ten pounds gets you one class; thirty-two covers a four-week run. That is the complete price list, and being on the interest list beforehand costs nothing and obliges you to nothing later.

Is forty too late to take up tap?+

Yes, and adult beginners are exactly who this class is for. The style is built from a small number of sounds combined in different orders, which suits a grown-up brain rather well — you can understand the system while your feet catch up.

Will I be able to practise at home?+

Better than with most styles. The rhythms work in socks on a kitchen floor, silently, and half of tap practice is getting the pattern right rather than the volume. Anyone living below you will appreciate that distinction enormously.

Do I need a partner for tap classes?+

Never. Tap is danced solo in your own space, facing the front, with no pairing off at any point in the hour. Come alone, come with somebody, it changes nothing about how any of it is taught.

What sort of music does tap use?+

Anything with a clear pulse, which in practice means plenty of standards and a fair amount of pop. The choice belongs to whoever ends up teaching, and they tend to pick whatever suits the step being drilled that week.

When will the tap classes actually start?+

As soon as this queue justifies hiring a suitable floor. Room first, date second, announcement third — an order that stops anything being promised and then pulled. This list is emailed ahead of the public.

Is there an upper age for tap?+

No. The adult band on the form runs to 75 and tap holds up well across all of it, being low-impact and paced by the person doing it. Junior brackets are there too, though grown-ups dominate this particular queue.
