All that jazz, minus the trial

Chicago Hen Party Dance Class NewcastleFosse angles, Grey Street afterwards.

Black, sharp and deliberately slow — this is the theme for a party that would rather look dangerous than get sweaty. Your teacher takes the Fosse vocabulary, the flexed hands, the isolated hip, the long stillness before a snap, and shapes a number composed on the day for the bodies actually stood in front of them. It happens in a hired city-centre room, one of three on our list, or wherever the party is staying between Tynemouth and Hexham. Ninety minutes costs £170 and sixty costs £145, with the venue’s own hire charge the single remaining line on your quote. Nowt in the way of dance experience is assumed, and no experience is needed to keep up.

And all that admin.

Date first, then a rough number and a start time you would like. Inside the day you get told whether the slot is free, which of the three rooms fits your numbers, and what each half of it costs — teaching fee here, room hire there, so there is nothing to squint at later on. Wor committee still deciding between shows? Book it undecided and change the theme later for free.

Why the musical suits a hen do

Attitude over athletics.

A Chicago hen party dance class runs on posture rather than stamina, which is the entire reason it works for a group spanning three generations. Every shape is held, angular and photographable: a shoulder rolled forward, a chin dropped, a hand splayed flat against a hip. There is no jumping to survive and no flexibility to prove. That makes it an unusually kind hen do dance class for anybody who has not danced since school, because nothing here moves fast enough to go visibly wrong. Treated as a dance hen party it also produces the best still photographs of any theme we teach, for the straightforward reason that stillness is easy for a phone to catch. Among hen party activities it is the one that leaves a group feeling glamorous rather than wrecked, and of all the hen party ideas the committee is weighing up on a Tuesday night, this is the one that comes out looking like it cost considerably more than it did.

We expected to feel daft and instead we felt like the poster. Ten of us in black with one bowler hat between us, and it looked properly good on camera.

I am sixty-three and I was not the worst one in the room. It was pitched so nobody was left flailing, and my daughter has watched the video roughly forty times since.

The show, cross-examined.

six answers before you enquire ↓

Do we have to wear black and bowler hats?+

Not unless the group fancies it. Costume is entirely yours to arrange — hats, fishnets and anything else are bought and carried by you, not handed out by us — and the choreography reads exactly the same in joggers. Most parties settle on black tops and let the bride have the hat.

Which songs from the show will we dance to?+

Chosen in the room on the day rather than promised weeks earlier. Your teacher arrives with the score in their head and picks once they have seen who is in front of them. Requests on the day are very welcome; a locked-in list booked in advance simply isn’t how a bespoke session works.

What does a Chicago hen class in Newcastle cost?+

£170 covers ninety minutes for the whole party plus the venue’s hire cost, and £145 covers an hour on identical terms — the fee, then the venue’s figure, both written down before you commit to anything. At your own hen house the venue side is nothing at all, and we never price by the head.

Is Fosse style difficult if nobody has danced?+

It is the opposite problem to most themes: the challenge is doing less, slowly, with intent behind it. There is no fast footwork to fall behind on, so a room of outright beginners tends to look startlingly good inside forty minutes.

Can the class run before dinner on Grey Street?+

That is the common running order. Take an afternoon slot, walk five minutes back into town afterwards, and you are at the table with the routine still in your legs. The Newgate Street room is the easiest of the three for that.

Could we combine this with another musical theme?+

Yes — say so in the message and your teacher will weave a second show into the same session. It remains one fee and one session; it simply means two flavours of choreography rather than one.

If another show steals it.
